Reference this quick article to learn what to donate to local food pantries, community pantries, and drop-off locations.
Indoor Food Pantries (staffed, scheduled hours)
These locations can store larger quantities and distribute full meal kits. Items should always have a label and be donated before the expiration date.
Most helpful items:
Canned proteins (tuna, chicken, beans, etc)
Pasta, rice, boxed meals
Canned fruit and vegetables
Shelf-stable milk
Oil, spices, and pantry staples
Household + personal care items also make a huge impact:
Toilet paper
Laundry soap
Baby supplies (formula, diapers, pull-ups, wipes)
Think meal ingredients or items a family can stretch.
Something to consider: Cans with an easy-open lid that do not require a can opener are more accessible for people without access to a kitchen.
Community Outdoor Pantries (Neighbors helping neighbors)
These are open 24/7, and they empty fast. Because neighbors are accessing them in real-time, fresh items are not only okay, they are deeply appreciated.
Fresh, ready-to-eat items that work well here:
Fresh fruit with a longer shelf life (apples, oranges, clementines)
Bagged produce that keeps well (carrots, potatoes, onions)
Bread or tortillas (great for quick meals)
Individually wrapped baked goods or snacks
Prepared, ready-to-eat meals (if weather permits — especially in cooler temps)
Other helpful items:
Protein bars, granola bars
Pop-top canned meals (soup, pasta, tuna/chicken)
Peanut butter or nut butter cups
Bottled water or juice boxes
Something to consider: Sometimes items disappear quickly or all at once. That doesn’t always mean someone is “taking advantage.” Often, the person who empties a pantry is doing it because they are in survival mode. When you’re living in scarcity, the brain shifts to protect the immediate need: “Feed my family today.”
Your donation might be the only food they’ll have for days.
And that makes what you give life-changing.
